Fibroadenoma is a benign (non-cancerous) breast lump often seen in younger women. It is usually painless, mobile, and firm.
Diagnosis: Clinical examination, ultrasound, and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC).
Treatment: Small fibroadenomas may only need monitoring; larger or growing ones can be surgically removed. Some of lumps can be removed in the clinic under local anesthesia. Larger lumps require general anesthesia and admission to a hospital for the procedure.
Breast cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can cause pain or tenderness, especially before menstruation.
Diagnosis: Ultrasound is the best imaging tool to confirm a cyst.
Treatment: Most cysts resolve on their own. Large or painful cysts can be aspirated for relief.
Mastitis is an infection of the breast tissue, commonly occurring during breastfeeding. It presents with pain, redness, swelling, and sometimes fever.
Treatment: Antibiotics, pain relief, and proper milk drainage. If an abscess forms, incision and drainage may be necessary.
Discharge from the nipple can range from milky to bloody.
Causes: Duct ectasia, infections, papilloma, or (rarely) cancer.
Evaluation: Clinical exam, imaging, and cytological examination of the discharge.
Treatment: Depends on the underlying cause.
Breast pain may be cyclical (related to menstrual cycle) or non-cyclical.
Causes: Hormonal fluctuations, cysts, trauma, or musculoskeletal pain.
Treatment: Lifestyle modifications, supportive bras, and medication for persistent cases.
Breast cancer remains the most serious breast disease but is highly curable when detected early.
Symptoms:
Diagnosis: “Triple assessment” approach — Clinical examination, imaging (mammogram/ultrasound), and biopsy.
Treatment: Depends on the final diagnosis
. May include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormonal therapy depending on the stage.

Yes. Men can develop conditions such as gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue) and, rarely, male breast cancer.
Women over 40 should get a mammogram every 1–2 years, or earlier if advised by a doctor.
